There’s something unpleasant about Emil Johnsen (who plays the title role). In Guidance, he alone created a creeping sense of discomfort. Here, his victim is much scarier than Peter Stormare‘s assailant. At the same time, one is struck by the horror of his situation. Johnsen is trying to study for the final exam, gets involved in the neighboring girl’s borderline conflict with her abusive boyfriend and ultimately becomes a perpetrator himself. The film is refreshingly short and keeps a decent pace. The claustrophobia works pretty well but the photo could do with a bit of a touch.

Det är något obehagligt över Emil Johnsen (som spelar titelrollen). I Behandlingen var det han ensam som skapade ett krypande obehag. Här är hans offer betydligt läskigare än Peter Stormares våldsverkare. Samtidigt som man blir tagen av skräcken i hans situation. Johnsen försöker plugga till sista omtentan, blir indragen i granntjejens borderlinekonflikt med den misshandlande killen och blir till slut förövare själv. Filmen är befriande kort och håller ett hyfsat tempo. Klaustrofobin funkar ganska bra men kameran skulle må bra av ett lite säkrare handlag.

Great fun with a rock musical. But do you really want the lyrics of your ancient favourite tunes to be emphasized? What I hate most about this movie is not the silly Guitar Hero introduction, the sexist excesses, Tom Cruise‘s useless over-acting or the deliberately ridiculed fagots. I hate this movie because I will never be able to listen to Foreigner or Guns N ‘Roses again without shudderring of unease at the recollection of pathetic jokes and pointless slapstick that has now been forever linked to the songs (Tom Cruise singing I wanna know what love is to Malin Åkerman‘s bum, just for one). Oh horror!

Jättekul med rockmusikal. Men vill du verkligen att texterna i gamla dängor skall framhävas? Det jag hatar den här filmen mest för är inte den fåniga Guitar Hero-inledningen, de sexistiska överdrifterna, Tom Cruises meningslösa överspel eller de medvetet förlöjligade bögarna. Jag hatar den här filmen för att jag aldrig kommer kunna lyssna på Foreigner eller Guns N’ Roses igen utan att rysa av obehag vid minnet av patetiska skämt och meningslös slapstick som nu har knutits till låtarna (Tom Cruise sjunger I wanna know what love is till Malin Åkermans rumpa, bara som exempel). Fy!

Woody Allen: A Documentary

Oh how hard it seems to be, to make film biographies. Is the filmmaker really that much dependent on the interviewee? In this film, Woody Allen‘s career is presented quite closely. All films are not included, but that’s hardly possible – the guy has made almost fifty films – but it’s interesting to see how his films reflect his life and his thoughts. But we still know almost nothing about him as a person. It would be interesting to know more how it is that he’s so productive – he is said to have written fifty stage jokes a day when he was sixteen – or why he married his former wife’s adopted daughter. All personal stuff is avoided very carefully. And you realize that his movies will tell you more about him – literally – than any interview ever will.

Oh vad svårt det verkar vara med filmbiografier. Sitter filmaren verkligen så mycket i knäet på intervjuobjektet? I den här filmen redovisas Woody Allens karriär mycket noggrant. Alla filmer tas inte upp, men det skulle knappast gå heller – killen har ju gjort nästan femtio filmer – men det är ändå intressant hur hans filmer speglar hans liv och hans funderingar. Ändå vet vi fortfarande nästan inget om honom som person. Det skulle ju vara intressant att undersöka hur det kommer sig att han är så produktiv – han lär ha skrivit femtio showskämt om dagen när han var sexton – eller varför han gift sig med sin förra frus adoptivdotter. Allt personligt undviks mycket noga. Och man förstår att hans filmer berättar mer om honom – bokstavligen – än någon intervju någonsin kommer göra.
